Rest Days and Goal Setting;

Back in October, I was training hard for a running race in November and I really started to appreciate rest days. I wrote a short blog post then on appreciating rest. For what it’s worth, I always subscribed to a “train hard, race hard” mentality, but struggled with burnout and injuries. In August of 2018, after suffering a fall and a broken collarbone, I spent a lot of time reading about professional training practices and in particular decided to try incorporating rest into my training.

Today was one of those rest days, and although I’m feeling restless after, I’m itching for tomorrow. Going easy on easy days means you can go harder on hard days, and that’s exactly what I plan to do tomorrow. The extra time that I have on rest days is the perfect opportunity to sharpen your goals and refocus.

Endurance sports are individual sports, but they are impacted by a million decisions you make away from the sport. Every nutrition and lifestyle choice impacts performance, and so even when you have perfect training planned, you may sabotage yourself in other decisions throughout the day. Remember that in order to achieve your goals, you need to set them first. Whatever you want to achieve, set your goals, and review them on rest days.
