Before you fall asleep tonight, I want you to try something. This short exercise will make your tomorrow more worthwhile, it will increase your sense of satisfaction in life, and with continued application it will help you make your dreams a reality.
Sit down with a blank sheet of paper and pen. Write out what you want most at the top of the page in one sentence as plain as you can. Dwell on that purpose. Feel it as important to you and experience the inner drive that will help you reach that goal.
Now, write down three things you can do tomorrow to reach your goal. Think of these as the three biggest fish you could catch tomorrow that will move you towards your life’s mission. These things could be anything, but they should be within your control, measurable and specific. It works best if you can frame this desire in terms of service to others. The magic of this method is in scheduling those tasks tomorrow. Take out your planner, and find the times and places when you will make these three things happen. Try scheduling one early in the morning. If you can hit a home run right off the first pitch, your motivation will continue throughout the day.
Your dreams are worth ten minutes tonight. If you don’t feel like it, maybe you should take a cue from Kurt Vonnegut.
