On the first day of class, a professor brought with him a one gallon mason jar and two small bags. He introduced himself to the class, and explained how in college, many of the students in this class would have to manage their time for the first time.
The professor took his mason jar, and filled it to the brim with large stones from the first bag. He turned to the class and asked, “Is the jar full?”
Everyone shook their heads, and murmured yes. From the second bag, the professor filled the mason jar to the brim with gravel and asked, “Now, is the jar full?”
The students shook their heads again, catching on. The professor then said, “What you spend time on is what you put in your jar first.”
The professor poured out the jar, separating the large stones from the gravel. He then poured the gravel into the jar, and then said, “If you fill your life with the small things first, you may find no time for the big things.”
He put the large stones in the jar one at a time; where all the stones and gravel fit before, all the large stones could not fit.
“When planning your day, do the big things first.”
