After identifying a target skill , researching and obtaining necessary equipment, it is time to make a plan. Keeping in mind the frustration barrier, what you learned in research, and why you chose this skill, you must decide on a goal.
This goal must be attainable, it must be lovable, and it must be something you can be enthusiastic about.
Why attainable? Inch by inch, it’s a cinch. Yard by yard, it’s too hard. By choosing an attainable goal, you are allowing yourself to measure your progress in a smaller scale. The novice learning piano should set a goal to play a simple tune instead of Rhapsody in Blue. A goal that is reachable is one of your best defenses against quitting.
Why lovable? A lovable goal is one that you are enthusiastic about. In the first post, you listed out the reasons for learning your target skill. Make sure that your first goal is in line with your reasons for learning the skill. If you are choosing to learn a foreign language, make your first goal to learn vocabulary of the places you plan on using that language. Choose simple greetings, learn to talk about families or the weather. Regardless of which direction you take it, insure the you understand this first goal as a stepping stone towards your ultimate goals.
