Start off by making a list of everything that you would like to learn. Anything can go on the list, as this step is brainstorming more than anything.
Note that skills typically fall into two categories, physical and mental. There is overlap in any skill, but keep in mind that physical and mental skills require different approaches. Furthermore, it is difficult to learn physical skills (parkour, for instance) if there is three feet of snow on the ground. Pick your skill to match your resources and time.
Once you have a list of skills, pick the one that you consider the most lovable. Choosing a lovable skill will minimize the frustration barriers in the early stages of learning. For example, if you dream of traveling Europe in retirement, learning Spanish, French, German and Italian may all be on your list. Those languages become lovable skills because of the way they are tied to your dreams.
Once you have picked a skill that matches your time and resources, and that you are enthusiastic about learning, take out a sheet of paper. In the middle of this sheet of paper, write down your skill, and write out the benefits to learning this skill. Not only will this help cement your enthusiasm to learn, but it will be helpful in the next few steps.
Check back tomorrow with for step 2, and comment with the skill you have chosen!
